Recon Car Loan Malaysia: Rates, Banks, Calculator & Tips (2025)
Financing is one of the biggest questions for recon car buyers in Malaysia. Can you get a loan for a recon car? Which banks offer the best rates? How much do you need for a down payment? What documents do you need?
This guide answers all of it clearly — from how recon car loans work, to a full comparison of banks, to tips to maximise your chances of approval.
Can You Get a Bank Loan for a Recon Car in Malaysia?
Yes, absolutely. Most major Malaysian banks offer hire-purchase loans for recon (imported used) vehicles. The process is similar to financing a locally used car, with a few additional considerations for the vehicle’s age and import status.
WGA Car works with a panel of multiple banks and finance companies. We handle the full application on your behalf, compare rates, and aim to secure the best terms for your profile.
How Does a Recon Car Loan Work in Malaysia?
Recon car financing in Malaysia operates as a hire-purchase (HP) agreement under the Hire Purchase Act 1967. Key features:
- The bank purchases the vehicle and “hires” it to you
- You pay fixed monthly instalments over the agreed tenure
- The vehicle is fully yours once the loan is fully settled
- Interest is calculated as a flat rate on the original principal (not reducing balance)
- Early settlement entitles you to an interest rebate under the Act
Recon Car Loan Interest Rates in Malaysia (2025)
Interest rates for used/recon car loans in Malaysia are typically 3.5%–5.5% p.a. flat rate, depending on:
- The lender and their current rates
- Your credit profile (CCRIS and CTOS)
- Loan tenure (longer tenure = slightly higher rate)
- Vehicle age (older vehicles may attract higher rates)
- Down payment amount
| Bank | Indicative Flat Rate (p.a.) |
|---|---|
| Maybank | ~3.5% – 4.5% |
| CIMB | ~3.8% – 4.8% |
| RHB | ~3.8% – 5.0% |
| AmBank | ~4.0% – 5.0% |
| Bank Islam | ~4.0% – 5.5% |
| Licensed Finance Companies | ~4.5% – 5.5% |
Rates are indicative and subject to change. WGA Car compares rates across our full panel for every customer.
How to Calculate Your Monthly Instalment
Recon car loan instalments in Malaysia are calculated using the flat rate method:
Formula:
Monthly instalment = (Principal + Total Interest) ÷ Loan tenure in months Total Interest = Principal × Annual Rate × Years
Example — RM150,000 loan at 4% for 7 years:
- Total Interest = RM150,000 × 4% × 7 = RM42,000
- Total repayment = RM192,000
- Monthly instalment = RM192,000 ÷ 84 = RM2,286/month
Example — RM250,000 loan at 4.5% for 9 years:
- Total Interest = RM250,000 × 4.5% × 9 = RM101,250
- Total repayment = RM351,250
- Monthly instalment = RM351,250 ÷ 108 = RM3,252/month

Down Payment for a Recon Car Loan
The standard minimum down payment is 10% of the vehicle price, subject to the lender’s assessment.
| Vehicle Price | 10% Down Payment | Loan Amount |
|---|---|---|
| RM150,000 | RM15,000 | RM135,000 |
| RM200,000 | RM20,000 | RM180,000 |
| RM300,000 | RM30,000 | RM270,000 |
| RM400,000 | RM40,000 | RM360,000 |
A higher down payment reduces your monthly instalment and total interest paid. For buyers with borderline credit profiles, a larger down payment can also improve loan approval chances.
Loan Tenure for Recon Cars
Most lenders offer up to 9 years (108 months) for recon car loans. However, some lenders apply a combined limit on vehicle age plus loan tenure — typically 10–12 years total.
Example: A 5-year-old recon car may only qualify for a 5–7 year loan tenure with some lenders, as the vehicle would be 10–12 years old at end of loan.
WGA Car will clarify the maximum available tenure for your specific vehicle before you commit.
Loan-to-Value (LTV) Ratio
Most banks finance up to 90% of the vehicle’s market value (not necessarily the purchase price). For older or higher-mileage vehicles, the LTV may be lower — 70–80%.
WGA Car provides clear guidance on expected LTV for each vehicle based on our experience with lender panels.

Will My Loan Be Approved? — Understanding CCRIS and CTOS
Malaysian banks assess loan applications primarily using CCRIS (Central Credit Reference Information System, managed by Bank Negara) and CTOS (a private credit reporting agency).
What banks look for:
- No more than 2–3 active late payments in CCRIS
- No bankruptcy record (checked via CTOS)
- Debt Service Ratio (DSR) below 60–70% of net monthly income — meaning your total monthly loan commitments (including the new car loan) should not exceed 60–70% of your take-home pay
Example DSR calculation:
- Net monthly income: RM6,000
- Existing commitments (housing loan, personal loan): RM2,000/month
- Maximum new car instalment: RM6,000 × 65% – RM2,000 = RM1,900/month
Check your CCRIS report for free via Bank Negara’s eCCRIS portal before applying, so there are no surprises.
Tips to Improve Your Recon Car Loan Approval Chances
1. Check and clean up your CCRIS first. Settle any outstanding late payments before applying. Even old late payment records can affect approval.
2. Increase your down payment. Putting down 20–30% instead of 10% reduces the bank’s risk and significantly improves approval chances for borderline applications.
3. Reduce existing debt first. Clearing a personal loan or credit card balance before applying improves your DSR immediately.
4. Use a guarantor if needed. A close family member with stable income and clean credit can strengthen a borderline application.
5. Apply through a dealer with multiple bank relationships. WGA Car submits to multiple lenders simultaneously, maximising your chances and getting you the best rate.
6. Don’t apply at multiple banks yourself. Multiple simultaneous applications show up in CCRIS and can signal financial desperation to lenders.
Can Self-Employed and Freelancers Get a Recon Car Loan?
Yes. Self-employed applicants are assessed on 6 months’ bank statements showing consistent income, plus SSM registration. Lenders look at average monthly income across the period. An accountant’s letter showing declared income can strengthen the application.
WGA Car has experience placing self-employed buyers with the right lenders for their income profile.
Can a Foreigner (EP/PR Holder) Get a Recon Car Loan in Malaysia?
Yes, for holders of valid Employment Passes or Permanent Residency cards with demonstrable Malaysian income. Requirements are stricter — typically a larger down payment (20–30%) and proof of stable Malaysian income. Contact WGA Car at 019-3203366 to discuss your specific situation.
What Happens After Loan Approval?
Once your loan is approved:
- Sign the loan offer letter
- Full payment disbursed to WGA Car within 1–3 working days
- JPJ ownership transfer (tukar nama) processed — 3–5 working days
- Vehicle delivered to your doorstep or collected from our PJ showroom
- Geran (ownership document) in your name delivered to you
Total time from loan approval to vehicle delivery: approximately 5–10 working days.
Can I Settle My Recon Car Loan Early?
Yes. Under Malaysia’s Hire Purchase Act 1967, you are entitled to an interest rebate (Rule of 78 method) for early settlement. Some lenders have a minimum lock-in period (commonly 12 months) before early settlement is allowed without penalty.
Always check the early settlement terms in your loan agreement before signing.
